I generally never take pictures of people. I find that the vast majority come out either staged or less-than-acceptable (in terms of photographic value). However, every once in a while, I catch a moment that is unexpected... where the picture portrays the person at the moment as they are, not necessarily as they want to be.

So, for this week's Foto-Friday, I submit a few non-portrait portraits that I have captured over the past few years.

Fufu, you did a really great job of capturing the essence of these people. Very nice indeed!

The unposed (therefore "natural") portrait is almost always more revealing and insightful regarding the subject's character. It takes an adept photographer to recognize the perfect moment to press the shutter release.

Very well done!

Very nice Fufu. I like the last one best -- I wonder what she's thinking about?

I can attest that she was thinking, "Holy crap, it's cold."

I prefer portraits myself, and i do a lot of large format, black and white portraits. Faces fascinate me.

These are outstanding, fufu. Each one is a statement.

Great pictures fufu - thanks for sharing them with foto-Friday. I seldom see portraits that express such emotion.

The second photo is very appealing. You can see the anticipation in his face.
I'd crop out the other head in the bottom foreground so as to not distract. JMHO. Nevertheless, it's a great image.

Yes, if I had the photoshopping ability, I would certainly crop out the head in the background. However, I don't think I could do so without making the picture look obviously photoshopped, so I've left it as is.

Actually, cropping won't make look it "obviously photoshopped." You are not doing anything else to the rest of the photo at all. It's simply cutting off the bottom part of the photo. Even the most basic of photo software will support cropping. Photoshop, Picasa, Gimp. Or even the software that came with your camera.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the head behind him. Yeah, I could look into working on that one in the front... it might throw off the balance of the picture, but it's worth a shot. I'm guessing that it'll cut off the bottom of the flag though, which is unfortunate.

People should learn to duck when I'm taking pictures. >.<

Great photographs, I agree with your sentiments, it's much preferable for the subjects to ignore the camera.

I'm sure you probably already know this but you'll want to be careful about posting images of people, most times it will require them to sign a model release, except in certain instances (like journalism, etc).

Yeah, I only posted images of people that I know personally and know would not object.
